THE LOWDOWN ON CBD OIL EXTRACTION
CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is a compound found in the cannabis plant now known to have medicinal benefits. Because of its recent surge in popularity, there’s been an increase in the extraction, production and manufacturing of products containing CBD including edibles, CBD oils, creams and salves.
CBD oil is extracted from the cannabis plant in a number of ways, but CBD Thera chooses this first method, utilizing CO2 to produce the highest quality CBD oil possible:
CO2 Cannabis Extraction Method
This form of extraction has three categories:
- Mid-critical – a mid point between supercritical and subcritical
This is the most commonly used method. The machines used freeze the CO2 gas and compress it into a supercritical cold liquid state where it is ideal for chemical extraction because it won’t cause the breakdown or deterioration that would make it unfit for human consumption.
Then the CBD and other phyto-chemicals are pulled from the plant. In the supercritical state the properties of the CO2 are halfway between a gas and a liquid form. Here, the CO2 can act like a solvent but without any of the related dangers. The product result is safe, concentrated and chlorophyll free.
This form of extraction requires low temperature and low pressure. Subcritical extractions take longer than supercritical extractions and produce a smaller yield. While it retains the terpenes, essential oils and other sensitive materials, it doesn’t extract larger molecules such as chlorophyll, omega 3 & 6. Subcritical extraction is less likely to damage terpenes.
This is simply a general range between subcritical and supercritical. Some companies combine supercritical and subcritical to create a full-spectrum CO2 cannabis extract. They use the subcritical extraction method to separate the drawn out oil and draw out the very same plant material using supercritical pressure. The oils are then homogenized into one which creates an unanimated oil. This is known as the CO2 Total Extraction Process.

The Solvent Extraction Method
Ethanol, a grain alcohol, and butane, a hydrocarbon gas are used for this process. They are flammable substances, making this method more dangerous than others. But they are the most common substances used in Solvent Extraction. Ethanol can extract the full range of cannabinoids and terpenes from the plant, making the end product safe for consumption, but it also extracts chlorophyll which can cause unpleasant side effects. You can filter the extracted oil to take out the chlorophyll, but it reduces the potency of the final product. Ethanol can be used to create high-quality cannabis oil appropriate for vape pen cartridges and other products.
Butane offers a stronger oil than ethanol, but it is more likely to contain solvents which could irritate the lungs.
It’s a straightforward and simple process. The liquid (whether it is butane, alcohol or ethanol) is added to the plant material and then strips away the cannabinoids and flavor from the plant along with some of the green colorings. When you have enough cannabinoids in a liquid state, heat the liquid to reduce it down to the CBD oil. If you use high-grade alcohol, you may produce good quality oil suitable for vaping cartridges. As well as destroying plant waxes, this method can produce oil that has chlorophyll or other harmful contaminants in it. Be aware that many CBD companies use this method for its cost effectiveness, instead of focusing on a quality extraction method.
The Olive Oil Extraction Method
While other liquids such as ethanol can be used in this process, all types of olive can be used for this extraction. For this process you have to heat the plant at a certain temperature for a specific length of time to activate the plant’s chemicals. Then it’s combined with olive oil, heated again for another length of time. This should result in the extraction of the cannabinoids, and the oil should have the CBD content you require. It’s an inexpensive method, put the product is perishable and must be kept in a cool dark place. This type of extraction is time consuming and produces a small amount of product for the time it takes to process..
The Dry Ice Extraction Method
The dry ice extraction method is another method, but it takes even more time and effort than olive oil extraction.
The cannabis plant is chopped into small pieces, covered with dry ice to freeze the trichome resins, then shaken to knock the frozen trichomes off. The resin is then sifted through different levels of mesh to create different strains of the extract. It’s a simple process that creates very little mess and produces a decent yield. However, the extraction is temperamental – too much shaking can ruin the quality of the final product.
